Using AI in Bible engagement …
We’re rapidly and constantly building innovative artificial intelligence (AI). Bible-specific GPTs (generative pre-trained transformers) exist right now. They work with giant information databases to generate words, images, code, and more in response to prompts the user enters. Do GPTs excite or concern you, or are your thoughts and feelings neutral?
Opportunities and challenges.
AI is profoundly transforming how people engage with various types of information, including religious texts such as the Bible. With the progressive digitization of oral and written communication, connections to all forms of literature are being enhanced. Yet, many Christian individuals and churches appear ill-prepared to address the challenges and opportunities AI presents.
The widening gap between Bible engagement and AI cannot be ignored. As the methodology for connecting people with the Scriptures falls behind the digital wave of knowledge and information, it creates obstacles to disciple-making, particularly among children, youth, and young adults. As a Lausanne Movement article suggests, “Addressing the knowledge gap and embracing the potential of technology is pivotal to crafting a future for Scripture engagement that is both inclusive and impactful on a global scale.”
Harnessing AI in Bible engagement.
Whether we use AI to advance Bible engagement objectives is no longer debatable. The increasing prevalence of AI-driven applications necessitates careful consideration of how we promote and provide access to the Scriptures. So, how can we harness AI’s capabilities to ethically and adequately connect people with God’s Word? Here are some suggestions:
Develop guidelines.
Creating ethical rules and regulations for the use of AI in Bible engagement is an essential first step. Establish protocols and procedures that facilitate the safe, transparent, and morally accountable use of AI. Guidelines should empower people to engage with Scripture at their own pace, allowing them to tailor their experiences to meet personal or communal faith formation objectives.
Foster trust.
An AI application should never be used if there are questions about its reliability or integration in a Christian context. Look for biases inherent in AI algorithms or misinformation that could undermine Bible engagement objectives or integrity. Promote AI with a proven track record of enhancing connections to the Bible that lead to spiritual growth.
Build partnerships.
When designed and used well, AI can be a valuable tool for Bible engagement. As AI is adopted for various uses in Scripture engagement (e.g. translation, studying and sharing Scripture, expediting Bible distribution), collaboration between churches, mission agencies and Christian schools should be fostered with AI companies and enterprises. Aim to work together in ways that spark innovation, create better resources, advance best practices, and maintain the authenticity of the biblical text.
Navigate the future.
The potential for using AI in Bible engagement is astonishing. However, the future level of interaction with God’s Word will, in part, depend on how Christian individuals and churches adapt to the use of AI. We must critically evaluate emerging AI’s potential impact and then adjust and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Anticipating the future is no easy task. The pace of AI adoption is unprecedented. ChatGPT reached 1 million users in the first five days after its release. AI-driven Bible engagement chatbot systems include Bible.ai, BibleChat.ai, BibleGPT, IlluminateBible.com, and OpenBible.info’s AI-assisted Bible Study. These systems are rapidly evolving. What can we expect from the next generation of AI?
The desired end.
Whatever we envision for AI-driven Bible engagement in the future, we should agree that it must never distract or divert people from God. We want technology that unequivocally enhances opportunities for people to feed on the Word. So, let’s encourage AI developers to think proactively, implement strategic initiatives, and invest in digital infrastructure that trains people in the required competencies to engage with Scripture effectively.
Ultimately, future connections with God’s Word involve integrating cooperative AI. I say this guardedly and with a requirement: The desired end is to enhance human capabilities to connect with the Scriptures, not replace them.
